Gas chromatography better known as GC, is a great analytical tool used by chemists to analyze compounds by separating them in the vapor phase without decomposition. This analytical chemistry instrument, the Gas Chromatograph (also known as aerograph or gas separators) can be used to test the purity of a particular substance, or for separating the different components of a mixture . In some instances, GC may be used to identify a compound. In preparative chromatography, GC can be used to prepare pure compounds from a mixture.

Gas-Liquid Chromatography

Gas chromatography is similar to column chromatography as well as other forms of chromatography, such as HPLC and TLC. In GC chromatography, the compound separation process in a mixture is carried out between a liquid stationary phase and a gas mobile phase, (in column chromatography the stationary phase is a solid and the mobile phase is a liquid). "Gas–liquid chromatography" also features a temperature oven controlled column through which the gas phase passes whereas column chromatography does not usually offer temperature control.
