Traditional metering pumps rely on check valves that are prone to clogging, sticking, or failing under continuous operation. Built on FMI’s proprietary CeramPump® technology, this system uses a single rotating ceramic piston moving inside a matched precision cylinder to displace fluid without check valves or bypass systems.
This elegant, valveless configuration offers highly accurate volumetric control, extremely low pulsation during fluid transfer, and minimal maintenance due to having fewer moving parts. Because only one component moves in the fluid path, the pump maintains highly stable volumetric metering over millions of operating cycles.
The QV variable-speed drive system provides incredibly fine control over flow output by adjusting both the piston stroke length (0–100%) and the rotational speed (90–1800 rpm).
When paired with the 1/4-inch piston in the R405 stainless steel pump head, this dual-control system provides an exceptional dispense resolution of approximately 0.016 to 0.32 mL per revolution. While capable of extremely precise low-flow dosing, the QV drive platform can also deliver robust transfer flows up to approximately 2.3 L/min (2300 mL/min) at full stroke and maximum rated speed. Because the pump is reversible, it can deliver fluid in either direction while maintaining accurate volumetric control.
The R405 stainless steel pump head belongs to the modular FMI R-series metering family. The wetted materials—including the 316 stainless steel pump head, precision ceramic piston/cylinder liner, and fluorocarbon (PTFE) seals—provide broad compatibility with aggressive chemicals and solvents.
Unlike standard polymer pump heads, this stainless steel configuration supports stable metering performance at elevated temperatures up to 177 °C (350 °F) and system pressures up to 100 psig (6.9 bar). The modular design also allows operators to quickly swap pump heads to optimize performance for different fluids or flow ranges.

Why use a 1/8" shaft on an FMI QV pump?
While many standard laboratory pumps use larger 1/4" or 5/16" shaft diameters, the 1/8" shaft extension is specifically engineered as a compact mechanical option. It allows for straightforward, space-saving integration into tight OEM spaces, automated analytical instruments, and customized panel-mount systems without sacrificing the heavy-duty performance of the QV motor.
What fluids and temperatures can the FMI R405 pump head handle?
The R405 pump head features a 316 stainless steel casing, a ceramic piston/cylinder, and PTFE seals. This robust construction provides broad chemical compatibility and allows the pump to safely handle aggressive industrial solvents and high-purity fluids at elevated temperatures up to 177 °C (350 °F) and pressures up to 100 psig.
How does the FMI CeramPump design eliminate check valves?
The CeramPump design utilizes a single, rotating and reciprocating ceramic piston with a cutout duct. As the piston rotates, this duct alternately aligns with the inlet and outlet ports, mechanically opening and closing the fluid path. This entirely eliminates the need for spring-loaded check valves, providing drift-free, highly accurate positive displacement metering.
