The process of distillation is the separation of components from a liquid mixture by selective heating evaporation and cooling condensation. Distillation apparatuses sometimes known as stills can be designed to work with very small volumes or very large volumes. As distillation systems get larger heating requirements and cooling requirements sometimes do not become cost-effective. Other types of separation techniques like spitting band distillation and thin wiped film evaporation have become quite popular and a cost-effective alternative in some situations.
